Tensions within Romania’s ruling coalition escalate over 2026 budget

Tensions within Romania’s ruling coalition have escalated, with both major parties signalling they could withdraw from government following disagreements over the 2026 budget.
Social Democratic Party (PSD) leader Sorin Grindeanu accused coalition partners of disregarding his party’s position, noting, however, that the PSD controls 46% of the coalition’s votes, according to G4Media. He reiterated that the PSD could exit the coalition after an internal evaluation, warning that such a move would likely trigger snap elections. Grindeanu ruled out both supporting a minority government and forming a new coalition with the opposition Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR).
His timeline for a decision appears to have softened. While he had previously suggested a move shortly after the budget vote expected around March 21–22, he now said he “would wish” for a final decision by Orthodox Easter, on April 12, adding that internal consultations within the party are ongoing.
At the same time, the National Liberal Party (PNL), PSD’s coalition partner, is also reassessing its position. According to HotNews, the PNL will hold a National Politburo meeting over the March 21–22 weekend to evaluate whether the PSD has breached the governing protocol during the coalition’s eight months in power.
Party sources indicate that a final decision will come after parliament votes on the budget. However, other internal voices suggest that most regional leaders favour staying in government, meaning the meeting is more likely to focus on reviewing coalition performance and formulating a response to the PSD’s criticisms rather than triggering an exit.
