Registrations of Slovenia's national internet domain, .si, have surged after US President Donald Trump announced that his administration would use the term “super intelligence” (SI) instead of artificial intelligence (AI), The Slovenia Times reported on September 29.

The abbreviation coincides with Slovenia's internet country code, prompting technology companies, investors and domain speculators to secure .si web addresses.

Following Trump's speech at the UN General Assembly last week, 3,930 new .si domains were registered within 24 hours, exceeding the 3,515 domains registered during the entire previous month, according to Register.si, Slovenia's national domain registry. More than 217,000 .si domains are now active.

International technology companies have also begun securing .si addresses. AI research company Recursive, for example, recently registered recursive.si, which currently redirects to its global .com website.

Register.si said its systems continued to operate normally despite the sudden increase in registrations.

The surge has fuelled speculation that Slovenia could benefit financially from increased demand for its domain, with comparisons drawn to Anguilla's .ai and Tuvalu's .tv domains, which have become valuable commercial assets.

Register.si rejected such expectations, saying the registry charges authorised registrars a flat administrative fee of €10 per domain and does not receive retail markups charged to customers.

“Speculation in the media about millions in earnings for Slovenia due to the increased interest in .si have no basis in reality,” the registry said, while advising holders of trademarks and company names to secure relevant .si domains.

Slovenia's SI abbreviation dates back to its independence in the early 1990s. The country initially sought the SL code, but it had already been assigned to Sierra Leone, leading Slovenia to receive SI instead.

The .si domain was added to the global root server in April 1992, while Slovenia's first web page was hosted the following year on a supercomputer at the Jožef Stefan Institute.
