Lithuania’s governing coalition is expected to hold together despite mounting disagreements over plans to build a new military training ground in Kapciamiestis, leaders of the ruling parties, the SD, “The Dawn of the River Neman” and “Greens and Farmers Union”, said on April 7 – though tensions within the alliance remain visible, independent Lithuanian news agency BNS and public broadcaster LRT.lt reported on April 8.

As reported by bne IntelliNewsthe controversy follows a parliamentary vote on March 24, when lawmakers approved the project at its first stage. While the measure passed comfortably overall, it relied on opposition support, with dissent coming from within the governing majority itself – an outcome that highlighted cracks in coalition discipline.

Zemaitaitis, leader of the “Dawn of the River Neman”, a radical right party in the coalition, confirmed he personally opposes the project, arguing that Lithuania should instead prioritise air defence. However, he left open the possibility that members of his party might reconsider in future votes.

Ligita Girskiene, leader of another coalition partner, the Farmers and Greens, downplayed speculation of a breakdown, insisting there had been no talks of forming an alternative majority.

Despite this, the Social Democrats signalled they will reassess the coalition later this month, citing concerns over reliability and adherence to agreements.

The training ground is part of broader defence plans, including preparations to host a German brigade and expand Lithuania’s military capabilities. Exercises at the site could begin by 2028, according to the defence ministry, BNS and LRT.lt reported.
