American food brands are expanding their presence in Serbia, with Hard Rock Cafe opening its first restaurant in the country and Burger King discussing plans to open, officials and company representatives said this week.

Hard Rock Cafe opened in central Belgrade on February 11, marking the chain’s debut in Serbia. Founded in London in 1971 by Americans Isaac Tigrett and Peter Morton, the brand has grown into a global franchise spanning restaurants, hotels and casinos in more than 60 countries.

Separately, Burger King is reportedly planning to open the chain in Serbia following talks with the government on investment opportunities. Serbia’s Economy Minister Adrijana Mesarovic met representatives of the US-based fast-food chain in Belgrade on February 12 to discuss potential openings, the economy ministry said.

“A constructive meeting with representatives of Burger King and a discussion about their plans to invest in our country and open more restaurants throughout Serbia is a clear confirmation that they recognise stable growth, development and a favourable business environment,” Mesarovic wrote in an Instagram post.

Burger King, founded more than 70 years ago, already operates outlets across much of the Western Balkans, including Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Kosovo and Montenegro.

Serbia hosts several other major US fast-food brands. McDonald’s operates in the country, making it the only Western Balkan market with the chain, while KFC is also present. Taco Bell is preparing to open its first Serbian restaurant soon, according to industry announcements.
