Poland recorded a record daily gas transmission of 115.4mn cubic metres (cm) in the 24 hours ending on Feb 4, state-owned transmission operator Gaz-System said.

The operator said the record included an export flow of 13.9mn cm, largely driven by demand from Ukraine. Low temperatures were the main factor behind the surge in transmission, both domestically and to Ukraine.

The national transmission system can already handle daily consumption of 170mn cm, and that capacity will increase further as new infrastructure comes online, Gaz-System chief executive Sławomir Hinc said, according to PAP.

Hinc listed the expansion of the Wierzchowice gas storage facility, a floating LNG terminal in Gdańsk and an additional connection of the Yamal pipeline at Wydartowo as forthcoming upgrades.

In January, monthly gas transmission through the system exceeded 3bn cm, with an average daily flow of 97mn cm, the operator said. The January figure was 45% higher than in January 2025, reflecting both colder weather and rising exports.

Exports totalled 2bn cm in 2025, with 99% shipped to Ukraine and the remainder to Lithuania, Gaz-System also said. Exports to Ukraine increased 13-fold compared with 2024.

"The export results are tangible proof that Poland is becoming a gas hub," Hinc said.

Hinc said the current supply mix is diversified, with about one quarter of gas arriving via the Świnoujście LNG terminal and another quarter via the Baltic Pipe. Roughly equal shares come from domestic production and storage, as well as imports from Germany through the Lasów interconnector and the Mallnow reverse flow on the Yamal pipeline.

Gaz-System also said it sees no immediate threats to the construction schedule of the floating LNG terminal in Gdańsk. The terminal is expected to begin operations in early 2028.

At the end of February, the operator plans to launch an open season procedure for the Gdańsk terminal, with binding capacity reservation offers due by May and the process set to conclude by the end of June.
