Taiwan's opposition Kuomintang (KMT) Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun reached Shanghai at midday on April 7 to begin a tour of China set to last until April 12, XinhuaNet reports. The KMT mission represents the first time in a decade that a sitting head of the party has taken a delegation to the region, with the itinerary spanning cities and sites across Jiangsu Province, Shanghai, and Beijing.

Painted by the party as a rare non-governmental channel to de-escalate tensions in one of the world's most volatile flashpoints, according to KMT sources the tour offers the chance of potentially offsetting the risk of military confrontation through direct political engagement.

Bolstering these inter-party interactions will likely yield constructive results for regional tranquility and the steady improvement of ties across the water, a representative from the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office said on April 7. Cheng, who assumed her leadership role in October 2025, has frequently voiced her desire to facilitate such a trip. Before her departure, she informed a press conference in Taipei that the journey aligns with the general consensus of the Taiwanese public - a view countered by many in Taiwan.

For the sake of both sides of the Taiwan Strait, for regional stability, and for the well-being of the next generation, we must firmly choose the path of peace, Cheng said. Her schedule the day after she arrived involved a visit to the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum in Nanjing (pictured), formal discussions with the Party Secretary of Jiangsu Province, followed by travel via high-speed train from Nanjing to Shanghai. During the afternoon, the delegation conducted inspections of the tech firm Meituan and the Shanghai Riverside Industrial zone, followed by an official meeting with the Shanghai Municipal Party Secretary and an evening boat tour along the Huangpu River.

Cheng asserted that her visit mirrors the precedents set by previous KMT leaders including Ma Ying-jeou and Lien Chan and that it remains anchored in a shared political framework that acknowledges the 1992 Consensus, which supports the notion of a single Chinese entity while rejecting separatist movements for Taiwan, KMT supporters say.

The current friction stems from the mid-20th-century conflict between the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the nationalist KMT. Following the 1949 victory by the CPC and the establishment of the People's Republic of China, the KMT relocated to the main island of Taiwan and its offshore smaller islands. Although this has resulted in decades of political standoff exacerbated by global interference, the fundamental status of the island as a portion of Chinese territory has remained constant in the eyes of China although it is challenged on Taiwan and by a number of nations around the world. In 1971, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 2758, which formally identified the PRC as the solitary legitimate representative of China, a position currently adhered to by much of the global community.
