Bangladesh presses India to accelerate Hasina extradition after envoy remark

Bangladesh has called on India to accelerate the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, adding pressure over a request that has strained ties between the neighbours. Dhaka renewed its appeal on October 4 2026, a day after India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi said no timetable could be offered for Hasina’s return, according to a report by PTI.
Hasina has remained in India since leaving Bangladesh in August 2024 after a mass uprising ended her government. Bangladesh’s so called International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Hasina to death in absentia in November 2025. Dhaka wants her returned over the 2024 crackdown and to face the sentence, according to a report by The Hindu.
A United Nations human rights panel estimated the death toll at about 1,400 during the violence. Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam said their government expected India to demonstrate political will in the matter.
Trivedi said the extradition request was being handled through a legal process and that its timing could not be predicted. He also said India had little choice but to receive Hasina after she was flown to the country aboard a Bangladesh Air Force aircraft and that she was still the Prime Minister of a neighbouring friendly country at the time.
The 2013 extradition treaty between the two countries, permits either signatory to reject requests involving offences considered political in character, adding a legal dimension to the dispute.
Tensions rose after Hasina said in August that she intended to return home in December. Bangladesh’s Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said she would be arrested immediately if she arrived. The dispute has also delayed a visit to New Delhi by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
