US President Donald Trump directed all federal agencies to immediately cease using technology made by artificial intelligence company Anthropic, accusing the firm of attempting to dictate how the US military conducts operations, in a post on Truth Social on February 27.

Anthropic, the San Francisco-based maker of the Claude AI assistant, has publicly maintained policies restricting the use of its technology in weapons systems and military targeting. The company has not publicly commented on the dispute referenced in Trump's post.

Trump said Anthropic had made "a disastrous mistake trying to strong-arm the Department of War, and force them to obey their Terms of Service instead of our Constitution," claiming the company's actions were "putting American lives at risk, our troops in danger, and our national security in jeopardy."

The president gave federal agencies a six-month phase-out period and warned Anthropic to "get their act together, and be helpful during this phase out period, or I will use the full power of the Presidency to make them comply, with major civil and criminal consequences to follow."

Trump described Anthropic as "an out-of-control, Radical Left AI company run by people who have no idea what the real world is all about."

The post, made one day before the launch of joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran, suggests a dispute between the AI firm and the US Department of Defense over the terms under which its technology could be used in military operations.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed his department is terminating all use of products made by artificial intelligence company Anthropic, including its Claude platform, following a directive from President Donald Trump, he wrote on X.

"The American people deserve confidence that every tool in government serves the public interest, and under President Trump no private company will ever dictate the terms of our national security," Bessent said.
