At least six people have died in a school shooting on the outskirts of Bangkok, according to reports from Thailand citing local police.

The suspected shooter, a 14-year-old male student in ninth grade according to local soures, was also found dead, authorities said. At least 15 people were injured, including two in critical condition, police told reporters at the scene.

Emergency responders were sent to Debsirin Nonthaburi School, where students and staff were evacuated as panic spread. Such school shootings initiated by students are incredibly rare in Thailand.

BBC News reported that a seventh-grade student who escaped the building said the shooter moved between classrooms before opening fire and shot a teacher outside a classroom.

The incident took place at Debsirin School, a network of schools across Thailand widely associated with educational prestige. At least two nearby schools, including a preschool, have reportedly dismissed students early as a precaution.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has expressed condolences for the victims and said the government had strict controls on firearm ownership. He described the shooting as a tragedy that should not have happened.
