Spain has reopened its embassy in Tehran, with Ambassador Antonio Sanchez Bendito announcing the resumption of operations on April 13, ILNA reported.

"I, along with my dedicated team, reopened the Embassy of Spain in Tehran today to join peace efforts from every possible direction, in accordance with the guidelines of the Foreign Minister," Sanchez Bendito wrote on X.

“We return to Tehran. The Embassy of Spain in Iran reopens following the ceasefire. Ambassador Antonio Sánchez-Benedito Gaspar, together with the diplomatic team and local staff, resumes his work with the commitment to support peace,” the embassy wrote.

Spain's decision to reopen its embassy in Tehran is likely to draw scrutiny from Washington. Relations between Madrid and the Trump administration have been strained, with Spain's left-leaning government under Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez among the most vocal European critics of the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran.

The ambassador entered Iran via the Astara border crossing on April 12 and said strengthening bilateral cooperation, pursuing a lasting peace, inspecting regional infrastructure and assessing economic and investment opportunities were all on his agenda.

Sanchez Bendito also expressed hope that the region's tourism potential could be evaluated during the visit, with a view to establishing joint cooperation in future phases.

The reopening comes after Spain stated that a military mission in the Strait of Hormuz did not fall within NATO's mandate.

Several European embassies in Tehran were closed or reduced to minimal staffing during the conflict. Madrid has resisted pressure to join naval operations in the Persian Gulf and has consistently called for a negotiated settlement, putting it at odds with Washington's more hawkish posture.
