Slovenia has more than tripled its installed solar power capacity over the past four years, in a strong acceleration in the use of domestic renewable energy sources and a renewed push toward energy self-sufficiency, the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Energy said on January 30.

By the end of 2025, the country had installed 1,571 MW of solar power capacity, compared with 468.1 MW at the end of 2021.

In 2025 alone, 146.5 MW of new capacity was connected to the grid, reflecting sustained investment momentum in the sector.

A large share of the new capacity came from self-sufficient solar power plants, which accounted for 74.4 MW. Growth has been particularly strong in community-based self-sufficient projects, highlighting a shift toward collective renewable solutions.

The number of community solar power plants has risen to more than 500, with total installed capacity reaching 36 MW. Their capacity is now roughly doubling year on year.

After nearly a decade of stagnation between 2013 and 2021, these developments indicate that Slovenia is once again closing the gap with other European countries in solar energy deployment.

Interest in solar investments continues to rise. In 2025, authorities received 4,439 applications for consent to connect self-supply installations, up 26% from 3,528 applications in 2024.

Officials expect applications to increase modestly in the near term before stabilising, supported by a long-term subsidy scheme offering favourable conditions for households and communities investing in solar energy.
