Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned what it called the "treacherous" Iranian attack on the US embassy in Riyadh in the strongest terms, warning the strikes could push the region toward further escalation, in a statement issued on March 3.

The ministry said the repeated targeting of diplomatic buildings was "cowardly and unjustified," in direct conflict with international law, including the 1949 Geneva Conventions and the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which grant immunity to diplomatic premises even during armed conflict.

Saudi Arabia warned that Iran's continued actions came "despite the Iranian authorities' knowledge that the Kingdom has confirmed it will not allow its airspace or territory to be used to target Iran," and said such behaviour would drive the region toward greater instability.

The kingdom reaffirmed its "full right to take all necessary procedures and measures to protect its security, the safety of its territory, its citizens, its residents and its vital interests, including the option of responding to the aggression."

The statement represents a significant hardening of Saudi Arabia's tone toward Tehran. The GCC had already held an emergency foreign ministers meeting on March 1, condemning Iranian strikes on member states, but Saudi Arabia's explicit reservation of the right to respond militarily marks a new level of tension between the two regional powers.

The US embassy in Riyadh was struck by two drones on March 3, causing a fire and minor material damage. The building was reported to have been empty at the time, with no casualties.
