Argentina's president will give a speech on September 15 evening, hours before the mandated budget deadline, which could imperil his cost-cutting administration.

Argentine President Javier Milei will address the nation on September 15 to present the 2026 Budget, and presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni confirmed this via his X account.

"Next Monday, September 15, at 9 p.m., the President of the Nation will speak on National Television as part of the presentation of the 2026 Budget," Adorni posted on X.

Milei's direct presidential appeal on the budget is a first for the leader, rather than delegating the task to his economy minister as in previous years. The government is legally mandated to file the budget before the deadline.

His upcoming address comes at a critical juncture for Milei's administration as it seeks to outline its fiscal roadmap and policy priorities for the forthcoming year. However, the administration has faced significant pushback from parts of the civil service for its cuts and push for economic rationalisation after years of decline.

According to local Spanish-language Noticias Argentinas, the president's message will provide certainty about the economic direction while elaborating on his adjustment and public spending control policies.

Milei will likely dictate his willingness to veto any congressional measures that threaten his zero-deficit targets, as the administration faces tough negotiations in an opposition-led Congress.

Milei's aggressive spending cuts have generated significant opposition from various sectors of Argentine society, with his La Libertad Avanza party suffering a notable defeat in Buenos Aires provincial elections.

The timing of this budget presentation will precede crucial midterm elections in October, which will determine the level of congressional support available to advance his economic agenda.

The success of his message in convincing both markets and voters of his fiscal strategy's viability could prove decisive for his administration's ability to implement further structural changes to Argentina's economy.
