The European Union and Oman have signed an agreement to establish an EU diplomatic mission in Muscat, marking a significant step in strengthening political, economic and strategic ties between the two sides, the Sultanate’s Foreign Ministry announced on July 21.

The agreement was signed on by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas and Oman's Foreign Minister, Badr Al Busaidi.

The new EU mission in Muscat, together with Oman's accredited mission to the European Union in Brussels, will provide an institutional framework for expanding cooperation and advancing shared interests across a broad range of sectors.

Both sides said the agreement reflects the growing depth of EU-Oman relations and their commitment to broadening collaboration in technology, energy, logistics, banking, minerals, infrastructure, food and water security, maritime security, as well as training and capacity-building.

The establishment of the mission will also provide the European Union with a permanent diplomatic presence in Oman, strengthening political dialogue and enhancing coordination on regional and international issues at a time of heightened geopolitical challenges.

Speaking after the signing ceremony, Al Busaidi said he hoped the EU mission in Muscat would deliver tangible benefits for governments, businesses and citizens on both sides. He said the new diplomatic presence would help unlock the full potential of the partnership and deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

Kallas described the agreement as a milestone in EU-Oman relations, saying it underscored the shared commitment of both parties to building a stronger partnership and expanding bilateral engagement.

The European Union and Oman also reaffirmed their shared support for multilateralism and their commitment to promoting peace, security and prosperity. Officials said the enhanced diplomatic framework would improve their ability to develop and implement joint initiatives addressing regional and global challenges.

During the ceremony, the two sides reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation, reaffirmed their commitment to sustained political dialogue and pledged to further strengthen collaboration in pursuit of shared strategic objectives and mutual economic and security interests.
