Japan's Nikkei 225 stock average closed 2.12% higher at 66,399.84 on September 7, up 1,378.90 points from the previous week's close, Yomiuri Shimbun reported on September 7.

The advance, the index's second consecutive daily gain, came after major semiconductor shares rallied in the United States at the end of the previous week, drawing buying into the artificial intelligence and chip-related names that carry the heaviest weight in the Tokyo benchmark.

Three stocks alone, SoftBank Group, Advantest and Tokyo Electron, accounted for more than 1,000 points of the Nikkei's rise.

The gains were narrowly based. Domestic demand-linked sectors including banks and property fell, and more than half of the shares listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange's Prime Market ended lower on the day.

The broader Topix index, which covers a far wider set of companies than the Nikkei, rose 22.57 points, or 0.55%, to 4,125.80, a much smaller advance than the headline index recorded.
