A Russian strike on two passenger buses in Kramatorsk killed 33 people and injured 18, Ukraine's State Emergency Service said on October 8, Meduza reported.
Ukraine's General Staff later put the toll at "at least 30" killed and about 20 injured, with some victims still unidentified, Ukrinform reported. The regional prosecutor's office said the strike likely involved a guided aerial bomb, and Donetsk regional governor Vadym Filashkin halted public transport in Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, saying "we have no right to risk" residents' lives, Reuters reported.
In Kyiv, drone attacks killed four people and injured 19 over the course of October 8, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said, Ukrinform reported. That evening Russia hit "one of Kyiv's key energy facilities", Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said, and more than 3mn residents lost power, the Kyiv Independent reported, citing officials.
Inside Russia, Ukraine's General Staff confirmed a strike on the Omsk refinery in Siberia, about 2,500 km from the Ukrainian border, on October 8, the Kyiv Independent reported. Omsk Governor Vitaly Khotsenko confirmed a drone attack on the region without saying what was hit. No halt or damage assessment had been reported at the time of writing.
Yandex confirmed that a drone attack overnight on October 8 started a fire at its data centre in Sasovo in the Ryazan region and that the centre's operations were fully suspended, TASS reported. Neither Ukraine's Air Force nor Russia's defence ministry had published a tally for the night of October 8-9 at the time of writing, and the Russian side of last night is not yet reported beyond media reports of explosions at a chemical plant in the Tver region.
Refinery strikes
Omsk region: Ukraine's General Staff confirmed a strike on the Omsk refinery on October 8, the Kyiv Independent reported. Ukraine's Special Operations Forces said their units hit the plant with upgraded FP-1 drones, the Kyiv Post reported. Governor Khotsenko confirmed a drone attack on the region without saying what was hit, while the open-source group Astra reported black smoke and residents reported explosions. Omsk airport was closed and mobile internet restricted, Ukrinform said, citing The Moscow Times. Gazprom Neft had not commented and no halt was reported at the time of writing. It was the second strike on the plant, after one on July 6 that halted it.
Bashkortostan: UPDATE, October 8: Ukraine's General Staff said its overnight strike on Gazprom Neftekhim Salavat caused a large fire, according to the Kyiv Independent report. Salavat Mayor Marat Zagidullin said falling drone debris started a fire in the city's industrial zone, that nobody was hurt and that the affected enterprise was still operating, without naming it, TASS reported. The open-source groups Astra, Exilenova+ and Supernova+ placed the fire on the refinery's grounds, Meduza reported. IntelliNews' refinery ledger now counts it as a strike; the plant has been recorded as halted since an attack on August 13.
Nationwide: plants reported halted or cut so far in October account for about 14.8mn tonnes a year, or 5% of Russia's 327mn tonnes nameplate capacity, by IntelliNews' refinery ledger, and up to 162.9mn tonnes, or 50%, if halts reported earlier still hold. The equivalent figure for September was 121.6mn tonnes, or 37%. Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said in early September that about 10% of Russian refining capacity was under repair.
Metal plants hit
No strike on a named Ukrainian steel, iron ore, coke, ferroalloy, pipe or non-ferrous plant was reported for October 8 or the night of October 8-9 at the time of writing.
Oil depots, factories and military targets in Russia
Ryazan region: UPDATE, October 8: a drone attack caused a fire at Yandex's data centre in Sasovo, damaging part of the facility's infrastructure, and the centre's operations were fully suspended, the company's press service told TASS. Nobody was hurt. Governor Pavel Malkov said a drone attack set fire to the roof of an enterprise in the Sasovsky district and broke windows in several private houses. Yandex Cloud said its ru-central1-b availability zone was still unavailable at 08:26 Moscow time and that the load had been moved to other zones. The data centre stands on the grounds of the Sasta machine-tool plant, which is under UK sanctions.
Tver region: on the night of October 8-9 Russian Telegram channels and Exilenova+, citing residents, reported flashes of explosions and smoke near the Redkino Experimental Plant, which is reported to make rocket-fuel components, the Kyiv Independent reported. The extent of any damage was unclear, and neither the regional authorities nor Ukraine's military had commented at the time of writing.
Krasnodar: drone fragments damaged an unnamed enterprise and started a fire that was quickly put out, with no casualties, the regional emergency headquarters said overnight on October 8, TASS reported.
Occupied Crimea: several settlements in western and central Crimea lost power after a Ukrainian drone attack overnight on October 8, and power use was restricted, the Russian-installed grid company Krymenergo said, TASS reported.
Nationwide: Russia's defence ministry claimed 399 Ukrainian drones were destroyed between 20:00 Moscow time on October 7 and 08:00 on October 8 over 20 regions, Crimea and the Black Sea, TASS reported. Governors claimed 26 over the Voronezh region and two over the Ryazan region. The ministry's figure for the night of October 8-9 had not been published at the time of writing.
Ukraine under fire
Donetsk region: two city buses were operating on the Kramatorsk street at the time of the strike, police said, and President Volodymyr Zelenskiy described the site as a bus stop, Reuters reported. The State Emergency Service's count of 33 dead and 18 injured was carried by Ukrinform at 14:14 Kyiv time, before the General Staff gave "at least 30" killed and about 20 injured that evening. Zelenskiy spoke of "dozens of people killed" in his evening address, Ukrinform reported. Elsewhere in the region, Russian attacks killed four people and injured six on October 8, Governor Filashkin said, the Kyiv Independent reported.
Kyiv: a drone hit a four-storey store in the Solomianskyi district on October 8, killing three people and injuring two, Ukrinform reported. The city military administration gave a toll of four killed and 21 injured across four districts, against Klitschko's 19 injured. In the evening Shmyhal said Russia was attacking one of the capital's key energy facilities, which he did not name, and that grid company DTEK's outage schedules were not in force because of an emergency shutdown, Ukrinform reported. Earlier in the day reduced grid power cut water pressure on the right bank, the Kyiv Independent reported.
UPDATE, October 7: a Russian strike hit the Borshchahivskyi Chemical and Pharmaceutical Plant, one of Ukraine's largest drugmakers, at about 17:00, a source in the pharmaceutical market told Ekonomichna Pravda, which reported no details of the damage. The company has not commented. Police neutralised two unexploded Iskander-M warheads of about half a tonne each that fell near homes in the Shevchenkivskyi and Darnytskyi districts during the October 7 attack, Ukrinform reported.
Kyiv region: three people were injured in the Bucha and Brovary districts on October 8, and three warehouses, an infrastructure facility, a house and four vehicles were damaged, Governor Tymur Tkachenko said, the Kyiv Independent reported.
Chernihiv region: UPDATE, October 7: Zelenskiy confirmed the Pryluky toll at 22 killed, including five children, and 54 wounded, Ukrinform reported. The Kyiv Post put the national toll from the October 7 attack at "at least 32" on the morning of October 8, against the 28 given by Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivskyi on the evening of October 7.
Nationwide: Ukraine's Air Force said Russia launched 142 Shahed-type drones, 82 of them jet-powered, on the night of October 7-8, and that 126 were shot down or suppressed, the Kyiv Independent reported. Russian attacks killed at least 10 people and injured 45 across Ukraine over the day to October 8, regional authorities said, the Kyiv Independent reported, a count that did not include the Kramatorsk bus strike.
Data centres, telecoms, media and R&D
Nationwide: no strike on a Ukrainian data centre, telecoms operator, broadcaster or research site was reported for October 8 or the night of October 8-9 at the time of writing. The Yandex data centre fire in Sasovo is covered in the Russia section above.
Weapons and technology
Ukraine: the Special Operations Forces said the Omsk strike was carried out with upgraded Fire Point FP-1 drones flying a route of nearly 3,000 km, coordinated with the Black Spark insurgent movement, the Kyiv Post reported. The claim has not been independently confirmed.
Denmark: the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation is buying Systematic's SitaWare Suite, an AI-based command-and-control system that links to the nationwide counter-drone system it ordered from Terma in August, under an agreement signed on September 29, Militarnyi reported. No contract value was given.
Arson and sabotage in the EU and the UK
Poland: prosecutors in Lublin closed their investigation into the incursion of more than 30 Russian drones on September 9-10, 2025 because the person who directed it could not be identified, prosecutor Marcin Kozak told Rzeczpospolita, as Militarnyi reported. Most of the files are classified. SIM cards from Polish mobile operators were found in some of the Gerbera drones, Militarnyi said, citing RMF24. Prosecutors found that the military's response, including missiles fired from fighter jets, followed procedure.
UK: UPDATE: counter-terrorism police arrested a seventh suspect, a 22-year-old British man, in Westminster on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts in the investigation into a possible attack on RAF Fairford, Reuters reported, as relayed by Militarnyi. Police have not named any country; Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said there are signs Iran may have been involved, which Iran denies.
Lithuania: UPDATE: up to 100 soldiers will reinforce border guards on the frontier with Russia's Kaliningrad exclave for about two weeks, until October 16, Interior Minister Martynas Katelynas said, Militarnyi reported.
Tit for tat
A day after Russia's October 7 barrage, one of the deadliest single strikes of the year hit two buses in Kramatorsk, and drones cut power to more than 3mn people in Kyiv. Ukraine responded with a second strike on the Omsk refinery, about 2,500 km from the border, while Yandex confirmed the drone fire that shut its Sasovo data centre. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Kathimerini the war was in a "strategic stalemate" with no prospect of a negotiated settlement, Meduza reported. Both sides' tallies for last night were still to come at the time of writing.
The ledgers
The running ledgers are kept as six public spreadsheets at permanent addresses. The first three are non-exhaustive, every row is sourced, and where only one side has spoken the row says so. Defence ministry figures are recorded as claims, and in the sabotage ledger attribution is given exactly as the authorities state it and no further. The fourth tracks what has happened to Ukraine's steel, iron ore, coke, ferroalloy and non-ferrous plants since 2021, grouped by owner. The fifth tracks strikes on data centres, telecoms, media and research sites; the sixth tracks refinery strikes.
