Russian drones hit Kyiv's Southern Bridge repeatedly from October 1 into the morning of October 2, closing it and halting metro trains across it, Kyiv officials said.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported two drone strikes near a support of the bridge on October 1, after which metro and surface transport across it were suspended, the Kyiv Post reported. The bridge was hit again on the roadway that evening and a fourth time on the morning of October 2, and the Southern and Paton bridges were closed in both directions, Focus reported.

A drone also hit the upper floors of a 25-storey residential building in the Darnytskyi district at about 06:00 on October 2, killing one person and injuring two, the Kyiv City Military Administration said, Focus reported.

Ukraine's Air Force said Russia launched 97 attack drones, 66 of them jet-powered, between 06:30 and 18:00 on October 1 and that 78 were downed or suppressed, 55 of them jet-powered, LB.ua reported. Its tally for the night of October 1-2 was not yet published at the time of writing.

In Russia, the defence ministry said its air defences downed 330 Ukrainian drones on the night of September 30-October 1, Vedomosti reported, and 227 more between 08:00 and 20:00 Moscow time on October 1, Sochistream reported. Drones attacked industrial infrastructure in Volgograd overnight on October 2, Governor Andrei Bocharov's office said. The ministry's tally for the night of October 1-2 was not yet published at the time of writing.

Refinery strikes

Volgograd: drones attacked industrial infrastructure in the Krasnoarmeisky district on the night of October 1-2, Governor Andrei Bocharov's office said. A flat in an apartment block on Udmurtskaya Street caught fire, one person was taken to hospital and the airport stopped accepting and sending flights, Fontanka reported. The governor did not name the site. Fires at the Lukoil Volgograd refinery and at the Kaustik chemical plant were reported by the ASTRA Telegram channel and residents, 24tv.ua reported. Neither Lukoil nor Russian officials confirmed a hit on the refinery, and no halt has been reported.

Krasnodar region: no restart has been reported at the Ilsky refinery, which IntelliNews reported on September 30 had halted after the September 26 strike, citing drone maker Fire Point and satellite imagery analysed by Militarnyi. Russian authorities have not confirmed the shutdown.

Nationwide: plants reported halted or cut in September account for about 121.6mn tonnes a year, or 37% of Russia's 327mn tonnes nameplate capacity, by IntelliNews' refinery ledger, and up to 159.2mn tonnes, or 49%, if earlier halts still hold. The Ilsky halt, which rests on Ukrainian sources, is not counted. Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said in early September that about 10% of Russian refining capacity was under repair.

Metal plants hit

Nationwide: Ukraine went a whole week in September without producing any steel after Russian attacks damaged its mills, the first such stoppage in a century, Oleksandr Vodoviz, head of the chief executive's office at Metinvest, said, IntelliNews reported, citing Ukraine Business News. All of Ukraine's steel plants have been damaged, some repeatedly, and restarting a single blast furnace at Zaporizhstal would cost at least $50mn, he said.

No new strike on a Ukrainian metals plant was found in the 48 hours to the time of writing. The status of 38 plants and mines is tracked in IntelliNews' metals and mining ledger, linked below.

Oil depots, factories and military targets in Russia

Samara region: a fire at an oil pumping station was reported on the night of October 1-2 by ASTRA and monitoring channels, 24tv.ua reported. No official confirmed it.

Bryansk region: a 17-year-old was seriously injured in Trubchevsk overnight on October 2 and is being moved to Moscow, acting governor Yegor Kovalchuk said, News.ru reported.

Tula region: five drones were downed overnight with no casualties, Governor Dmitry Milyaev said, News.ru reported.

Occupied Donetsk, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia regions: Ukraine's General Staff said its forces hit a drone storage and launch site near Donetsk, a drone command post near Pokrovsk, a missile and artillery depot near Verkhniokamianka and a troop concentration near Tymoshivka, Ukrinform reported on October 1.

Nationwide: President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on September 29 that the plan for Ukraine's long-range operations in October had been approved, Fakty reported.

Ukraine under fire

Kyiv: a drone hit a school in the Solomianskyi district overnight on October 1 and started a fire while children and staff were in the shelter; there were no casualties, Klitschko said, Ukrinform reported. Warehouse facilities in the same district were damaged by a drone later that morning, Ukrinform reported. Debris fell in the Holosiivskyi district on the morning of October 2, damaging windows and cars, Focus reported. Russia's defence ministry said it struck the Renta Logistik transport and logistics centre in Kyiv, which it said housed a workshop for unmanned boats; it was not established whether this was the damaged warehouse site.

Kyiv region: 42 facilities were damaged and six people injured in Russian attacks over the day to October 1, the regional administration said, Ukrinform reported.

Kharkiv region: Kharkiv and 14 settlements came under attack over the day to October 1 and eight people were injured, Ukrinform reported.

Odesa region: Russia's defence ministry said it struck a dry-cargo ship it said carried military and dual-use cargo in the port of Chornomorsk on the night of September 30-October 1, Vedomosti reported. Reuters reported the same claims. No Ukrainian confirmation was found.

Data centres, telecoms, media and R&D

Odesa region: Russia's defence ministry said it struck the HOSTING-UA data centre, which it said processed intelligence for the Ukrainian army, on the night of September 30-October 1, Vedomosti reported. Reuters reported the claim. No statement from the company or Ukrainian officials was found, and the claim could not be verified.

Kyiv: a drone hit the grounds of a nuclear research facility on September 30, Ukraine's nuclear safety regulator said. The fire was quickly put out, no one was hurt and the reactor, shut down since 2022, was not damaged, Al Jazeera reported. The facility was not named.

Kyiv: a social media post on October 1 said Ukrtelecom was on fire. No official, company or media confirmation was found at the time of writing.

Weapons and technology

Ukraine is negotiating with several European countries and ammunition makers to buy 20mm rounds for its F-16s' cannons to shoot down Russian jet-powered drones, Bloomberg reported on September 30, citing people familiar with the talks. About 150 rounds may be needed per drone and about 10,000 rounds a day at the current intensity of attacks, the Kyiv Post reported, citing Bloomberg. Ukraine's Air Force put Russian jet-drone launches at about 350 in June and about 2,850 in August.

Russia has expanded the Tsymbulova drone base in the Oryol region used to attack Kyiv, adding eight domed shelters for jet drones and a launcher in four weeks, with six more Geran-5 launchers under construction, according to satellite imagery analysed by the Strategic Aviation Telegram channel, the Kyiv Post reported. The Geran-5 now accounts for about 75% of attacks on Kyiv, up from about 10% a month earlier, the channel said.

The Russian government has submitted a bill to the Duma that would let companies deduct spending on anti-drone protection from taxable profit, provided the assets are transferred to the Defence Ministry or other state agencies, IntelliNews reported, citing The Bell.

Kazakhstan's Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tleuberdi said he had again asked Ukraine to refrain from drone attacks on vessels carrying Kazakh crude through the Black Sea, IntelliNews reported. The CPC terminal near Novorossiysk handled almost 50mn tonnes between January 1 and September 25, about 7% less than a year earlier.

Arson and sabotage in the EU and the UK

UK: UPDATE, RAF Fairford incident of September 27: Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there were "strong indications that Iran played a part" in what happened at the base, which is used by US bombers, Stars and Stripes reported. The five men arrested have been released on bail, no one has been charged, and Iran's foreign minister denied involvement.

Estonia: UPDATE, Milrem arson: a new rotating US unit will arrive in Estonia in November, US Ambassador Roman Pipko said, the Kyiv Post reported, after Estonia said Russian intelligence ordered the August 15 arson. Estonia also barred Russian and Belarusian grain from transiting its territory, IntelliNews reported.

EU: no new arson or sabotage incident in the EU was found for September 30-October 2 in a limited search.

Tit for tat

Russia kept up its day and night drone raids on Kyiv, hitting a river crossing, a school and a tower block, and claimed strikes on a data centre and a ship in the Odesa region. Ukraine's drones reached Volgograd, where a Telegram channel reported fires at the city's refinery, and Russia's defence ministry claimed 557 Ukrainian drones downed over the night of September 30 and the day of October 1.

The ledgers

The running ledgers are kept as six public spreadsheets at permanent addresses. The first three are non-exhaustive, every row is sourced, and where only one side has spoken the row says so. Defence ministry figures are recorded as claims, and in the sabotage ledger attribution is given exactly as the authorities state it and no further. The fourth tracks what has happened to Ukraine's steel, iron ore, coke, ferroalloy and non-ferrous plants since 2021, grouped by owner. The fifth, started on September 27, follows strikes on data centres, telecoms, media and research sites.

RUSSIA STRIKES LEDGER: Russian strikes on Ukraine's economic infrastructure, 315 rows

UKRAINE STRIKES LEDGER: Ukrainian strikes on economic infrastructure in Russia and occupied territory, 183 rows
