A total of 650 drones flew towards the Moscow region overnight on October 6, and 105 were shot down on their approach to the capital, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said, Interfax reported.
Sobyanin said the drones came between 20:30 on October 5 and 05:00 on October 6 and that most were destroyed "at distant lines". All four Moscow airports - Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo and Zhukovsky - restricted flights during the night, according to Interfax. A day earlier he had said 9,994 drones flew towards the Moscow region between September 1 and the morning of October 5, of which 862 were destroyed on the approach to the city, Interfax reported.
In the surrounding Moscow oblast, air defences destroyed or suppressed 185 drones over 16 municipalities, a 20-year-old man was killed in Radumlya in Solnechnogorsk district and six people were injured, Governor Andrei Vorobyov said, the regional news site Regions.ru reported. The Russian defence ministry had not published its tally for the night at the time of writing, and the rest of the Russian side of last night is not yet reported.
In Ukraine, Russian glide bombs killed six people and injured 59 in Kharkiv on October 5, Governor Oleh Syniehubov said late that evening, Ukrinform reported. A Turkish-flagged grain carrier sank in the Black Sea off Romania after a drone strike the same day, with two dead, according to Romania's interior ministry.
Ukraine's defence ministry said on October 4 that 51% of Russia's oil refining capacity had been damaged by its long-range strikes. Moscow has not commented on the claim.
Refinery strikes
Nationwide: no new strike, halt or restart at a Russian refinery was reported for October 5 or the night of October 5-6 at the time of writing.
Nationwide: "Fifty-one percent of damaged oil refining capacity is a serious blow to the enemy's economy, its ability to wage aggression and to supply its forces," Defence Minister Yevhen Khmara said on October 4, citing an assessment by military intelligence, the General Staff and the defence ministry, UAWire reported. The ministry listed the Moscow, Yaroslavl, KINEF, Ust-Luga, Perm, Ilsky, Saratov and Syzran refineries among recent targets and said Ukraine had tripled production and procurement of long-range attack drones this year. The claim has not been independently verified.
Krasnodar region: Russia is ringing the Ilsky refinery with shipping containers to carry anti-drone cables, and satellite images show no visible damage to its primary processing units after the September 26 attack, the satellite analysis group Exilenova+ said, as relayed by the monitoring account NOELreports on X. That conflicts with Ukrainian reports, carried by IntelliNews on September 30, that the plant had halted after three crude units were hit. Russian authorities have confirmed neither.
Nationwide: plants reported halted or cut in September account for about 121.6mn tonnes a year, or 37% of Russia's 327mn tonnes nameplate capacity, by IntelliNews' refinery ledger, and up to 159.2mn tonnes, or 49%, if earlier halts still hold. The Ilsky halt, which rests on Ukrainian sources, is not counted. Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said in early September that about 10% of Russian refining capacity was under repair.
Metal plants hit
No new strike on a Ukrainian steel, iron ore, coke, ferroalloy, pipe or non-ferrous plant was reported for October 5 or the night of October 5-6 at the time of writing.
Oil depots, factories and military targets in Russia
Moscow oblast: Vorobyov said 10 private houses were damaged in four villages in Istra district, where two people were taken to hospital, a house caught fire in Lobanovo in Domodedovo district and a house was damaged in Pokrovskoye in Volokolamsk district. No industrial target was reported hit.
Moscow: flights at the capital's airports were allowed only by agreement from about 03:00 to 04:22 Moscow time, and about 90 flights were delayed, the news site msk1.ru reported.
Kursk: drone debris fell near a bus stop on Engels Street on October 5, setting an electric bus on fire, and four people were injured, including an eight-year-old girl, Governor Alexander Khinstein said, Interfax reported.
Rostov region: an air-raid alert in Taganrog ran from 21:50 on October 5 to 05:40 on October 6, and Governor Yuri Slyusar said information on damage and casualties was being checked, Rambler reported.
Adygea: UPDATE, night of October 3-4: Ukraine's security service SBU said drones of its Alpha special operations unit hit an Su-35 fighter and an Su-34 fighter-bomber at the Khanskaya airfield, about 500 km from Ukrainian-held territory, the Kyiv Independent reported on October 5. Russia has not confirmed any aircraft losses.
Nationwide: the Russian defence ministry claimed 199 Ukrainian drones destroyed over 11 regions overnight on October 5, Fontanka reported, and 343 between 08:00 and 20:00 Moscow time that day, AiF reported.
Ukraine under fire
Nationwide: Russia launched 205 Shahed-type attack drones, 49 of them jet-powered, along with Gerbera, Banderol/Dan-T and Parodiya decoy drones, from 18:00 on October 4, and 172 were downed or suppressed by 08:00 on October 5, with hits at 13 locations, the Air Force said, Ukrinform reported. The Air Force tally for the night of October 5-6 had not been published at the time of writing.
Russian attacks cut power to new consumers in Donetsk, Kharkiv, Sumy, Poltava, Odesa and Kherson oblasts on the morning of October 5, grid operator Ukrenergo said, Ukrainska Pravda reported. Ukrenergo said no consumption restrictions were planned for October 6, Ukrinform reported.
Kharkiv: at least three glide bombs hit the Slobidskyi district on October 5, damaging a five-storey residential building and setting warehouses on fire, and a gas station was damaged in the Kyivskyi district, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said, giving an early toll of three killed and 25 injured, Ukrinform reported. Syniehubov later raised the toll to six killed and 59 injured after body parts of a sixth victim were found. The evening before, a Banderol missile strike on the city killed a 42-year-old man and injured eight people, Syniehubov said, the Kyiv Independent reported.
Black Sea: the Turkish-flagged grain carrier Royad Mammadov caught fire and sank after a drone strike about 20 nautical miles off the Romanian coast at around 11:00 on October 5, and two people were killed and 11 crew rescued, Romania's interior ministry said, Ukrinform reported. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Russian drones hit the Turkish-owned ship, which was carrying corn, killing its captain, and that the fate of one more person was unknown.
Odesa region: Russia launched a massive attack on industrial and port infrastructure on October 5, causing large fires that were put out, with no casualties, regional governor Oleh Kiper said, Ukrinform reported. The Russian defence ministry claimed hits on a port facility in Vilkove, on fuel storage and a dry cargo ship in the port of Chornomorsk and on a dry cargo ship south of Odesa, TASS reported.
Kharkiv region: the Russian defence ministry also claimed a hit on a power substation in Kochetok, TASS reported. Ukrainian officials have not commented on it.
Sumy: UPDATE, October 4: the strike that morning destroyed the production facility of drugmaker KUSUM and killed an employee of its engineering department, the company said, Ukrinform reported.
Zaporizhzhia: a drone hit a high-rise building in the Kosmichnyi district on the evening of October 5, setting flats on fire and injuring two people, acting regional governor Mykhailo Semikin said, Ukrinform reported.
Kyiv: debris from a downed drone fell in the grounds of a residential building in the Pecherskyi district late on October 5, setting parked cars on fire, the city military administration said, Ukrinform reported.
Rail: Ukraine is seeking locomotives from countries that use its track gauge after Russian strikes nearly exhausted its reserves, Agriculture Minister Taras Vysotskyi told the Financial Times. Mykyta Hrubov, chief executive of port operator TIS, told the paper three locomotives had been lost around its terminal at the port of Pivdennyi. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on September 15 that more than 500 locomotives had been damaged or destroyed since the full-scale invasion, more than half of them in 2026.
Data centres, telecoms, media and R&D
No new strike on a data centre, telecoms operator, media outlet or research site was reported for October 5 or the night of October 5-6 at the time of writing.
Weapons and technology
Ukraine is developing a small missile called Nika to shoot down jet-powered Shahed drones, and a German-Ukrainian interceptor, the SPYS, was tested successfully, Zelenskiy said on October 4, Ukrinform reported. "Both the Germans and we are reacting positively. Tests will be conducted," he said of Nika.
Automated machine-gun turrets that use artificial intelligence to aim have shot down their first Russian jet-powered drones, including a Geran-5, Air Force spokesman Yurii Ihnat said on October 5, the Kyiv Independent reported. "Machine vision is used in the shooting down," he said. Zelenskiy said a day earlier that 12 such turrets had been installed where jet drones are most active, including around Kyiv.
Russia has fitted its jet-powered Geran-4 with a magnetic sensor made by US company PNI Sensor, a camera-based navigation system called Susanin that works without satellite signals, a shaped-charge warhead for cutting bridge structures and power-line pylons, and a Russian-made engine from the Alabuga plant in Tatarstan in place of a Chinese one, Ukraine's military intelligence agency HUR said, the Kyiv Post reported on October 5.
Ukrainian pilots will soon begin training on French Rafale jets, Zelenskiy said after a call with President Emmanuel Macron on October 5, adding that a new French support package was expected soon, the Kyiv Independent reported.
Arson and sabotage in the EU and the UK
Moldova: Moldova has recorded 10 Russian drone overflights in the past ten days, as many as in the whole of 2024, and 54 so far in 2026 against 17 in 2025, Polish analyst Kamil Calus said on X, citing Moldovan data. Moldova's defence ministry reported six airspace violations on October 3, the Ukrainian tech outlet Mezha reported. On October 5 debris fell near the Palanca-Udobne crossing on the Ukrainian side of the border, damaging a bus and injuring a Moldovan border guard, Calus said, an incident also reported by the Kyiv Post.
Estonia: Estonia is moving troops closer to the Russian border under an "active defence" strategy, has moved its First Brigade headquarters to Johvi, 50 km from the border, and is building a base in Narva for up to 1,000 troops, the Financial Times reported on October 5.
Tit for tat
Moscow counted 650 drones in a single night, a man died outside the capital and all four of its airports were restricted. Russia's glide bombs killed six people in Kharkiv and a grain carrier went down off Romania, while Kyiv's defence ministry claimed half of Russia's refining capacity has been damaged, against Novak's early-September estimate of about 10% under repair.
The ledgers
The running ledgers are kept as six public spreadsheets at permanent addresses. The first three are non-exhaustive, every row is sourced, and where only one side has spoken the row says so. Defence ministry figures are recorded as claims, and in the sabotage ledger attribution is given exactly as the authorities state it and no further. The fourth tracks what has happened to Ukraine's steel, iron ore, coke, ferroalloy and non-ferrous plants since 2021, grouped by owner. The fifth tracks strikes on data centres, telecoms, media and research sites; the sixth tracks refinery strikes.
