Laos finds two new rare earth zones across four provinces

Laos has identified two promising rare earth zones spanning four provinces following field surveys, according to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce.
The Laotian Times reported that the potential areas are located along the Bolikhamxay-Khammuane border in central Laos and across Sekong-Attapeu in the south. The ministry announced the findings after Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandon visited the Institute of Industry, Commerce, and Energy on August 14.
Authorities have yet to release detailed information about the size, reserves or development potential of the newly identified areas.
Rare earth elements are a group of specialised metals widely used in modern technology, including semiconductors, electronic components, lasers and other advanced manufacturing applications.
The discoveries could add to Laos’ existing rare earth industry, which has expanded in recent years with support from Chinese companies.
In 2023, Laos opened a Rare Earth Quality Supervision and Testing Laboratory in Xaythany district, Vientiane. The facility was developed with Chinese support to conduct quality testing and research.
The country already has significant heavy rare earth deposits in northern Xieng Khouang and Houaphanh provinces.
In 2022, the government approved a 50-square-kilometre rare earth mining concession in Xieng Khouang, covering parts of Khoun and Phaxay districts. Earlier that year, Laos launched another 50-square-kilometre project in Houaphanh, comprising a 5-square-kilometre mining site and a 45-square-kilometre exploration area.
Lao state media reported in 2023 that around 15 rare earth mining projects were operating across the country.
The government has also sought to expand the industry. In late 2025, it proposed converting protected forest areas in Xieng Khouang and Houaphanh into sites for rare earth mining and processing.
The latest discoveries could further strengthen Laos’ position in the regional rare earth supply chain, although details of potential investment and development plans have not yet been disclosed.
