L&T wins major Dhaka metro contracts in Bangladesh

India's Larsen & Toubro (L&T) (BSE: 500510) (NSE: LT) has won two design and build systems packages for Dhaka Metro Line 1, Bangladesh's first underground metro line, the company said in a stock exchange filing on October 27, 2026.

L&T classifies the orders as "major", a category it uses for contracts worth INR50bn ($525.83mn) to INR100bn, though it did not give an exact value.

The contracts return the Indian engineering group to Dhaka, where it previously built and handed over the integrated railway systems package for Metro Line 6. That line was Bangladesh's first metro corridor and now carries passengers commercially.

Line 1 is financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and will run for about 31 km, adding a second rapid transit route to one of South Asia's most crowded cities. According to the filing, the first contract, Contract Package CP09, covers track works and electrical systems. L&T will carry it out with Japan's Sumitomo Corporation (TYO: 8053).

The partners will handle design, procurement, installation, testing and commissioning of the full track, the power supply and distribution network, traction substations, the overhead catenary system and related electrical equipment along the corridor. The second contract, Contract Package CP10, covers signalling, telecommunications and platform screen doors.

L&T will deliver these across the whole network. L&T said the two packages together make up the central operating systems of the line. The project has two routes. The Airport Route runs from Kamalapur to the airport, and the Purbachal Route links Natun Bazar with Purbachal Terminal.

The line will have 19 stations and a depot at Pitalganj. Ramkumar S, Senior Executive Vice President and Head of Transportation Infrastructure at L&T, said the repeat business from Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) showed what the company could do on large urban transit projects.

He pointed to the electrical and mechanical systems L&T supplied for Dhaka Metro Line 6 and to work now under way on the Jakarta Metro in Indonesia. He said this experience would help the company combine multiple systems while working closely with equipment manufacturers and other stakeholders. L&T describes itself as a $32bn Indian multinational active in engineering, procurement and construction projects, high-tech manufacturing and services.
