An Iraqi hacking group has claimed responsibility for a wave of cyber attacks against major US-listed technology companies including eBay (EBAY) and Spotify (SPOT), with the strikes causing widespread disruption to services, Tasnim News Agency reported on May 13.
The group, calling itself Islamic Cyber Resistance in Iraq – Team 313, took responsibility for an attack on eBay's San Jose, California-based operations, the agency said.
The strike disrupted the platform for close to two days last month, leaving users unable to browse listings, complete purchases or process transactions.
Cybersecurity analysts said the incident bore the hallmarks of a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, in which attackers overwhelm servers by directing large volumes of spoofed traffic at them.
Team 313 claimed in online messages that it had used what it described as serial and rapid attacks to maintain continuous pressure on eBay's infrastructure, while warning that more US companies were on its target list.
"There is a simple way out. We have emailed you the session contact ID. If you do not get in touch, we will continue the attacks. You are losing money every minute, do not be a fool," the group said in a message addressed to eBay the agency reported.
The attack was estimated to have cost the online marketplace up to USD200mn per day in lost transactions before services were gradually restored.
The same group later claimed responsibility for an attack on music streaming platform Spotify, which generated thousands of complaints about service disruption.
"We carried out a large-scale cyber attack against Spotify's main servers, causing a major disruption to the website and a complete shutdown of the application," the group said in a message on Telegram.
The hackers later escalated their threats, claiming they had maintained a complete shutdown of Spotify's main internal servers and kept the login interface disabled.
"Large companies will not be safe from punishment. The hand of vengeance will reach you," the group said.
The claims could not be independently verified. Neither eBay nor Spotify have publicly confirmed the cause of the disruptions referenced or attributed the incidents to any specific actor.
Team 313 is one of several Iraqi hacking collectives that have claimed attacks on Western and Israeli targets during and after the recent war between Iran, Israel and the United States, with cybersecurity researchers tracking a sustained increase in activity from Iran-aligned groups since the conflict began.
