Iraqi Airways launches direct Basra–Baku route

Iraqi Airways has launched direct flights between Basra and the Azerbaijani capital Baku, as the state carrier expands its international network and responds to rising seasonal travel demand, Shafaq News reported on July 7.
The route opens up a fresh point-to-point link between southern Iraq and the Caucasus, a corridor that has drawn growing interest from Gulf and Iraqi holidaymakers seeking cooler summer destinations within a short flight.
The airline said the route would begin operating on July 8 with one weekly flight, giving passengers in Basra and Iraq's southern provinces a direct connection to one of the Caucasus region's leading tourism destinations.
Director General Munaf Abdul Munim said the launch showed growing demand for international travel during the current holiday season and was intended to improve connectivity for travellers from southern Iraq.
"The new route offers residents of Basra and neighbouring governorates a direct and convenient link to Baku, one of the region's most popular tourist destinations," Abdul Munim said.
The service forms part of Iraqi Airways' broader strategy to expand its international route network and widen travel options for Iraqi passengers.
Abdul Munim said the carrier was continuing to open additional international destinations in response to rising passenger demand and to strengthen its presence in regional and international markets.
