Iran's Pezeshkian tells Macron that Strait of Hormuz threats will have global consequences

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has told French President Emmanuel Macron that any threat to the Strait of Hormuz will carry severe consequences for global trade, while blaming US officials for the failure of the Islamabad peace talks, Khabar Foori reported on April 14.
In a telephone conversation, Pezeshkian reportedly said Iran's negotiating team had acted in good faith during the Pakistan-hosted talks, but that US overreach and a lack of political will among senior American officials had prevented an agreement from being finalised, despite what he described as progress at the technical level.
"Iran has always sought to ensure lasting security for the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, and any threat to the security of this region will have widespread consequences for global trade," Pezeshkian said.
"At the same time, Iran is fully prepared to confront any scenario within the framework of its national interests."
The Iranian president said diplomacy remained Tehran's preferred path for resolving disputes and that Iran was ready to continue dialogue within international legal frameworks. He called on Europe to play a constructive role in encouraging the United States to respect those frameworks.
Pezeshkian said approaches based on threats, pressure and military action would not resolve the situation but would instead add to its complexity. He also said Iran had previously reached agreements with European countries on the nuclear file and that the existing frameworks were clear.
On the ceasefire, Pezeshkian said Iran's conditions had been stated transparently and that it was Tehran, not Washington, that had insisted on the precise implementation of commitments, a position he said Pakistani officials had acknowledged.
Macron, for his part, said he had discussed the situation with the US president and stressed the need to include Lebanon within the initial ceasefire framework. The French president also raised the nuclear file and the legal regime governing the Strait of Hormuz.
