Iran on March 3 denied claims by Israeli media that a strike had targeted a session of the Assembly of Experts or the interim Leadership Council, dismissing the reports as fabricated.

An informed source told Tasnim news agency that the claims were "completely false," adding that no such session was taking place at the time of the alleged strike.

"These rumours are psychological operations designed to create a sense of power vacuum in the country," the source said.

The denial came as Israel and the United States continued air strikes across Iran for a fourth consecutive day, allegedly targeting the building in the city of Qom outside of Tehran.

Israeli media had earlier reported that the strikes had targeted Iran's senior clerical leadership, which has been managing the country's governance structures since the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran's 88-member Assembly of Experts is the constitutional body responsible for selecting the supreme leader and overseeing his performance. The body holds heightened significance at present, as it is tasked with choosing Khamenei's successor.

In the interim, a three-member council comprising the president, head of the judiciary and a member of the Guardian Council has assumed the supreme leader's duties under Article 111 of Iran's constitution.

The Israeli claims appeared designed to signal the depth of intelligence penetration into Iran's leadership structures. Israel has previously demonstrated such capability, most notably with the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in July 2024, which was widely attributed to Israeli intelligence.

Since March 1, at least 201 people have been killed and 747 injured in air strikes across Iran, according to the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS).

The UN on March 3 called for an urgent investigation into a strike on a girls' school in Minab that reportedly killed dozens of children, warning such attacks may amount to war crimes.
