Indian central bank moves forex swap scheme deadline forward

India's central bank, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has moved forward the expiration of its foreign exchange swap incentive mechanism by 30 days to August 31, 2026, prompting domestic financial institutions to accelerate overseas fundraising efforts ahead of the revised cutoff, Reuters reported.
The scheme had previously offered financial incentives to institutions raising international capital to support Non-Resident Indian deposit accounts, encouraging banks to tap global debt markets. With the deadline now compressed, banks are collectively targeting a minimum of $5bn in combined fundraising before the window closes.
Major private-sector banks are preparing debt issuances ranging between $500mn and $1.5bn per entity, reflecting the scale of individual fundraising plans as institutions race to capitalise on the scheme's remaining incentives.
Several public-sector banks are separately targeting smaller raises of between $250mn and $500mn each in foreign currency, broadening participation across India's banking sector.
Year-to-date foreign currency debt issuance by domestic lenders has already exceeded $7bn as of mid-August, approaching historical highs, underscoring the scale of activity generated by the incentive programme even before its accelerated conclusion.
The earlier-than-expected deadline is likely to intensify near-term issuance activity across India's banking sector, with lenders compressing their fundraising timelines to lock in favourable terms.
Investors and market participants will likely watch total issuance volumes closely as the August 31 cutoff approaches, given the potential implications for India's broader capital inflow trends and banking sector liquidity positioning.
