Cooperation between traditional banks and fintech companies is increasingly reshaping Ukraine’s agribusiness sector, as the country presses ahead with a broader digital transformation despite the challenges of war, reported Ukraine Business News.

Yannis Kyriakopoulos, chairman of the board of Greece’s Piraeus Bank, said partnerships between lenders and technology firms were becoming essential, particularly in complex and capital-intensive industries such as agriculture.

“Financial technologies help provide better and faster services. That is why the partnership between these sectors is now a global trend,” Kyriakopoulos said.

He pointed to Piraeus Bank’s cooperation with fintech firm Activitis as a key example. The partners are developing the WEAGROBANK digital platform, a service designed to improve access to banking products for small and medium-sized farming businesses in Ukraine.

The platform will form part of the broader WEAGRO ecosystem, a digital environment that combines advanced technologies with customised financial solutions tailored to the needs of agricultural enterprises. The initiative aims to simplify financing, payments and other banking services for farmers, a segment that often struggles with limited access to traditional credit.

Piraeus Bank said the project fits into the wider objective of supporting Ukraine’s reconstruction and economic modernisation. Kyriakopoulos estimated that the long-term cost of rebuilding the country would exceed $1 trillion, a sum far beyond the capacity of Ukraine’s domestic banking system.

As a result, he said, there was substantial scope for international financial institutions and investors to play a role in funding Ukraine’s recovery, with agribusiness expected to remain a strategic priority given its importance to exports, employment and food security.
