Armenia will prioritise artificial intelligence (AI), data science, biotechnology, semiconductor design and high-tech engineering solutions as part of a strategic push to strengthen its technology sector, Deputy Minister of High-Tech Industry Ruben Simonyan said on February 17.

Speaking at the American Chamber of Commerce in Armenia’s (AmCham) 25th anniversary conference, Simonyan outlined the government’s roadmap for turning the country’s scientific and technological heritage into global competitiveness.

Key priorities include modernising the educational system to meet international standards, building robust technological infrastructure such as an Engineering City, regional technology centres, and advanced data centres, and developing legal and regulatory frameworks aligned with global markets. The government also aims to expand the startup ecosystem through improved access to financing and strengthen international cooperation, leveraging Armenia’s global Diaspora for investment and expertise.

Simonyan stressed that Armenia, as a small country, cannot compete in all technological fields and must focus on sectors where it has comparative advantage. He highlighted that the country has already made progress in semiconductor design, computer science, and AI, producing competitive products for global markets.
