Venezuela crisis draws India’s concern after US military action
January 5, 2026

Heightened instability in Venezuela following US military strikes has raised global concern, with implications for energy markets and regional security. India said it is closely monitoring developments and urged restraint as events unfolded over the weekend of January 3, according to an official statement by the country’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

India’s MEA said recent incidents in Venezuela were deeply concerning and emphasised India’s commitment to the welfare and safety of the Venezuelan people. New Delhi called on all parties to resolve differences through dialogue to preserve peace and stability in the region, the ministry said.

The statement followed US attacks on multiple locations in Venezuela on January 3, 2026, including a military base hit by US Army’s Delta Force. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were detained by US forces and transferred to a US warship before being taken to New York to face federal charges related to alleged narco terrorism offences.

US President Donald Trump said during a press conference that US entities will be involved in exploiting Venezuela’s rich crude oil reserves which also opens the door for India’s large refineries such as the ones owned by Reliance Industries (NSE: RELIANCE) that are able to handle Venezuela’s sour crude to participate in the process.

The US has issued sanctions waivers to Reliance Industries in prior years to deal with Venezuela as the country has a huge backlog of dues stuck in the country.

US prosecutors alleged that Maduro abused power for more than two decades to facilitate cocaine shipments into the US, and charged him with conspiracy, drug importation and firearms related offences. The indictment was filed in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, the US Attorney General said.

India’s MEA also said that the country’s embassy in Caracas remains in contact with members of the Indian community and continues to provide assistance. An advisory was issued for Indian nationals in Venezuela, urging caution and close coordination with the mission.
