Russia urges citizens to leave Iran via Armenia and Azerbaijan

Russia's Embassy in Tehran urged all Russian citizens in Iran to leave the country immediately if possible on February 28, warning them to stay away from military and government facilities as US and Israeli strikes continued across the Iranian capital and other cities.
The statement by the Russian embassy came as Israeli and US forces continued strikes across Iran on February 28, hitting targets in Tehran, Isfahan and Qom in a joint operation that President Donald Trump said was aimed at eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime and ensuring Tehran never obtains a nuclear weapon.
Explosions were first reported near the Russian embassy compound in downtown Tehran at around 9:45am local time, with Iran's airspace subsequently closed, internet connectivity collapsing to 4% of normal levels and the Tehran Stock Exchange suspended.
"In connection with the aggression of the USA and Israel against Iran, the Embassy asks Russian citizens and compatriots residing in Iran to be vigilant, carefully monitor official messages and recommendations of the Embassy and Iranian authorities, and refrain from being near military and government facilities," the embassy said in a statement issued at 09:00 local time.
The embassy urged Russians to remain calm, avoid panic being spread through media and social networks, and refrain from taking photographs or video anywhere in Iran. It advised against any travel to Iran until further notice.
In a follow-up message issued at 09:49 local time, the embassy said the optimal exit routes were through Astara into Azerbaijan, noting that crossing the border required obtaining the necessary permission from Azerbaijani authorities in advance, and through the Nurduz/Agarak checkpoint into Armenia. It urged caution and vigilance when travelling.
The advisory came as Iran's internet connectivity collapsed to 2% of normal levels, its airspace remained closed and the IRGC confirmed ongoing missile and drone strikes against US military bases in Bahrain, Qatar and the UAE as part of Operation True Promise 4.
