Romanian telco Digi thrives in Spain’s competitive mobile market

Romanian telecommunications operator Digi Communications (BVB: DIGI) remained the leading player in Spain’s mobile market by net customer gains through number portability in 2025, marking its fifth consecutive year at the top, according to an analysis by Profit on January 8.
Digi Spain recorded a net gain of almost 1mn mobile lines last year, setting a new internal record for portability gains on the Spanish market. In gross terms, the operator attracted 1.673mn subscribers from rival networks in 2025, up 24% year on year, the analysis showed.
The result once again exceeded the performance of Digi’s main competitors and extended a period of sustained dominance that began in 2021, according to data cited by CincoDías. The strong customer acquisition performance comes as Digi prepares the listing of its Spanish subsidiary, making its continued expansion in one of Europe’s most competitive mobile markets that is particularly significant for investors.
Although Digi entered the Spanish market in 2008, its ascent to the top tier of mobile operators was gradual. Between 2018 and 2020, the company had already established itself as a fast-growing challenger, but leadership in net customer additions during that period belonged to the MásMóvil group, which benefited from an aggressive multi-brand strategy, CincoDías reported.
The breakthrough year was 2021, when Digi overtook MásMóvil for the first time in net mobile portability. Digi ended that year with 360,000 new lines, compared with 342,000 for its rival, marking a shift in competitive dynamics in the Spanish market. Since then, no other operator has managed to surpass Digi in net customer gains through portability.
In 2022, Digi consolidated its leading position across both fibre and mobile services. Customer acquisition accelerated further in subsequent years, with the company adding around 800,000 net mobile lines in 2023 and more than 900,000 in 2024, before approaching the one-million mark in 2025.
The sustained gains underline Digi’s ability to expand in a saturated and highly price-competitive market dominated by large international telecoms groups. Analysts cited by the Spanish press attribute the company’s success to aggressive pricing, simplified offers and a strong focus on value-conscious consumers.
