Tehran's municipality has put forward a list of proposed renamings of nine streets, squares and public spaces in the Iranian capital after senior figures killed during the US-Israeli war on Iran, with the central Azadi (Freedom) Street to be renamed after slain supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to a document circulating in Iranian media on April 20.

Azadi Street, one of Tehran's main thoroughfares running between Azadi Square and the Islamic Revolution Square in District 9 and 10, would be renamed "Martyr Imam Khamenei Street," using the title of "Ghaed Shahid" or "martyred leader." The proposal received 41 expressions of support during the consultation, the highest of any in the document.

The 13-hectare park near the Yadgar-e Imam-Hemmat highway intersection in District 2 would be renamed "Angels of Minab," in reference to the 168 victims of the US strike on the Shajareh Tayyebeh girls' elementary school in Minab on the opening day of the war on February 28.

Ziba Street, between Shariati and Qaba streets in District 3, would be renamed "Children of Minab" in honour of the schoolchildren killed in the same strike. The proposal received 38 expressions of support.

Ram Street, also in District 3, would be renamed after Kamal Kharrazi, the longtime foreign policy adviser who was killed attempting to negotiate peace with the US. The figure received three expressions of support.

Sana'i Street in District 4 would be renamed after Hojatoleslam Sayyed Esmail Khatib, Iran intelligence minister killed during the war. The proposal received 16 expressions of support.

Sabalan Square in District 7 would be renamed after Amir Abdolrahim Mousavi, Iran's slain armed forces chief of staff. The proposal received 39 expressions of support, the second-highest of any in the consultation.

Nobonyad Square in District 1, at the intersection of Pasdaran and Shahid Langari streets, would be renamed after Amir Shahid Aziz Nasirzadeh, Iran's slain defence minister. The proposal received four expressions of support.

Sepah Street between Sepah Square and Islamic Revolution Street in District 7 would be renamed after Sardar Shahid Mohammad Pakpour, the slain commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The proposal received four expressions of support.

The northern side of Persian Gulf Lake, including the lake square and Daryacheh Street in District 22, would be renamed "Sea of the Martyr Alireza Tangsiri." Tangsiri was the IRGC navy commander killed in the war. The proposal received two expressions of support.

The choice of Azadi Street, whose name means "Freedom" and was renamed from Eisenhower Avenue after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, carries particular weight as one of Tehran's most prominent thoroughfares connecting the airport to the city centre.

Tehran Mayor Alireza Zakani has separately proposed turning the site of Khamenei's killing, the Pasteur Institute and the Minab school into permanent war museums. The list comes as Mashhad prepares a mass funeral procession for Khamenei at the Imam Reza shrine, with the date yet to be announced.

Ali Larijani is not on the list of nine renamings. Despite being one of the most senior figures killed in the opening days of the war (he was secretary of the Supreme National Security Council), he doesn't appear to have been allocated a street or square in this particular Tehran municipality consultation
