Bulgaria’s main stock index, SOFIX, surged 14.41% in the first trading week of 2026 following the country’s entry into the Eurozone, the Bulgarian Stock Exchange (BSE) said in a press release on January 13.

The index rose from 1,156.43 points to 1,323.06, while trading turnover jumped nearly 184% compared with the previous week. The number of transactions also increased 112.79% on a year-on-year basis.

The market’s response echoes the reaction after Bulgaria joined the European Union in 2007, when SOFIX climbed 6.37% in its first trading week, turnover grew 12.24%, and the number of transactions doubled.

“Joining the Eurozone places Bulgaria in a new position on Europe’s financial map. The market reaction, even on the very first trading day, is indicative – SOFIX rose by 3.7% in just one day and continued at a similar pace in the days that followed. This is a clear sign of long-term confidence building, improved market infrastructure, and higher financial awareness,” said Assoc. Prof. Dr Manyu Moravenov, executive director of the BSE.

The upward trend in both the index and turnover has continued into the second week of trading in euros. Market participants said the transition to the euro is expected to attract international investors and support deeper integration of the Bulgarian capital market.

Bulgaria joined the euro zone on January 1, 2026, becoming its 21st member.
